Yes, Bo dies.
If you would like to read the book but not that scene, you can follow these guidelines (obviously, there are some spoilers):
I want to skip…
Just the moment of death: When Jess says “Come on, good boy. We’re going home.”: skip to the beginning of the next scene, which starts “I build a fire…”
Bo getting hurt: When Jess starts to fight with the pilot, skip to the beginning of the next chapter.
Bo being in pain/suffering: After the above, when Jess returns to the cabin (“I stagger up to the cabin”) skip to the bottom of the next page (in the paperback); pick up at “Raph is coming for us.” The beginning of the next chapter is important, but at “less of a chance I can screw something up” you can skip the next five paragraphs and pick up with “I walk without much purpose.” Finally, at the end of the chapter that includes the final fight with Raph, skip the first scene of the next chapter entirely, and pick up with the second scene, which begins “I build a fire…”
